Contributions of Life Cycle Thinking to Sustainable Development Pathways – and the Role of Global LCA Data Access Network

Kyoto, Japan (7th October, 2016)

It’s been 14 years since the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) initiated the Life Cycle Initiative as one of the core activities of the 10-Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production, providing support to governments and private companies worldwide for decision making based on life cycle thinking, through activities such as developing guide documents on various themes and supporting capacity building.

On the other hand, environmental policies based on life cycle thinking have been developing in various countries, such as the Circular Economy Package, which contains the Environmental Footprint pilot phase led by the European Commission, Ecodesign, and Green Public Procurement.

In order to support these activities based on life cycle thinking, the “Global LCA Data Access Network (GLAD)” addressing international networking and interoperability of LCA databases was established led by UNEP, which 14 countries worldwide has participated. Its activities have been increasing towards its full launch in the autumn of 2017.

The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) organized this workshop, as an opportunity to exchange opinions and share new information with policy makers and professionals from various countries, so that industries can smoothly progress activities worldwide.

In session 1, policy makers from various countries, who have been actively promoting these activities, will give lectures and discuss on how to utilize life cycle thinking in the activities in various countries.

In session 2, we will introduce the current status of GLAD’s activities and its contents, and exchange opinions with the professionals involved on its future vision.

In session 3, professionals from various countries will introduce the contents of the LCA database development activities, which have been advanced alongside GLAD’s activities, and discuss with the participants on how GLAD can contribute to LCA database development and environmental policies in various countries based on life cycle thinking.

We will be looking forward to seeing the participants who are interested in environmental policies based on life cycle thinking and LCA databases.

This workshop is a part of METI’s “Project of studying methodologies to communicate environmental impact reductions”, and will be operated by Mizuho Information & Research Institute, who is a consignee of the project.
